MA Magazine Journalism
As part of my Masters in Magazine Journalism from the prestigous Cardiff University, I studied Media Law, Digital Journalism and Public Administration.
We created both a mini mag and a full sized magazine as part of the course, learned editing, subbing, Photoshop, InDesign, SEO and had to maintain an online blog.
I also completed the dissertation, creating an alternative women’s lifestyle website: researching the demographics, creating content and building the physical site.
My masters taught me how to effectively communicate in a Journalistic manner, how to sub and edit and gave me a solid understanding of SEO, InDesign and Photoshop. I have added to this with my own experimentation and enjoy tackling digital softwares. Having grown up in a digital age, I am competent with most software and am always quick to learn anything new.
BA English Literature
Modules included Feminisms, Women’s Literature, Postmodernism, Literature into Film, Hitchcock, Queer Studies, The Film Musical, Crime Fiction, Creative Writing, Conduct Literature and Gothic Literature.
I have worked freelance for various publications and media outlets for over 8 years.
As part of my Masters dissertation, I created, edited and ran a grrrl zine-inspired culture website, http://www.snatchzine.com – encouraging contributors and gaining a small following.
I worked as a Staff Writer, researching and writing content that will resonate with our creative readers. I love to bring in artist opinion and create engaging content, such as features. Currently I freelance for the site, in and outside of the office.
An aspect of my job at Future is using my own initiative – I actively seek new and interesting stories and am always eager to grab opportunities for features, pitching them via editors. I seek out books for review, and use my extensive list of illustrator and designer contacts to pick out article ideas and add new contributors to our pool. I am ecstatic when posts I come up with and argue to write for the site end up doing well – one example of this recently is a post for Creative Bloq, entitled “How to level up your art this February”. The site is focusing on lists and tutorials since the new year, but I felt that a feature could work for this topic, promoting an online project, Month of Love.
ImagineFX/3D World/Computer Arts/Net
I mostly work for digital art and design magazine, ImagineFX. I enjoy finding the hottest digital sci-fi and fantasy art news for the mag, researching various news topics and stories, create engaging news features (most typically around a debate/challenge that artists are currently facing) as well as compiling their FXPosé gallery and injecting the pages full of top quality art. I have attended numerous events for the magazine, conducted interviews and pitched feature ideas. I also commission artists and content as part of my daily job!
I have pitched and written online features for the brand and have freelanced as a reviewer for almost 2 years – both album and live reviews. I also worked in office for work experience for two weeks in 2013.
Being passionate about music from a young age meant I became involved in hospital radio at aged 16. I am a fully trained DJ and enjoy writing features, playing a wide variety of music and discussing fun topics on air!
The Cardiff Times
Here I wrote, edited and created my very own DPS every month, focused on new film releases. I conducted reviews and compiled suggestions for readers.
Following in-office experience back in 2012, I freelance for the free entertainment magazine, mostly in their music section – reviewing various albums from Bush to Throwing Muses and even got the opportunity to interview metal band Alice in Chains.
